In this section of the business plan we are looking at the employment by industry for the target market of Kent County County in comparison with the State of Michigan. The employment by industry analysis gives us another great look at the economic picture of the target market and also gives us a good idea of how many folks are employed in our own industry - the Roofing Contractor industry as compared to other industries.

The following are industries groups into which employment is broken down:

  1. Health care & social assistance
  2. Retail trade
  3. Wholesale trade
  4. Manufacturing
  5. Administrative & support & waste management & remediation service
  6. Finance, Insurance & Real Estate

  8. Accommodation & food services
  9. Construction
  10. Other services (except public administration)
  11. Transportation & warehousing
  12. Information
  13. Management of companies & enterprises
  14. Educational services
  15. Arts, entertainment, & recreation
  16. Agriculture / Mining / Forestry / Utilities

The following items stand out when we look at the employment by industry analysis for the target market of Kent County and the state of Michigan:

  1. Construction jobs are 3.8% of total employment in Kent county compared to 3.5% for the state of Michigan.
  2. Manufacturing jobs 19% of the total in Kent county compared to 15.7% for the state of Michigan.
  3. Jobs in the wholesale trade industry comprise 8.4% of all jobs in Kent county compared to 5% statewide.
  4. Retail trade provides 10.1% of all jobs in Kent county compared with 13.3% in the state of Michigan.
  5. Transportation and Warehousing only provide 3.3% of all the employment in Kent county compared to 3.1% statewide.
  6. Finance, Insurance and Real estate jobs are 5.3% of the total in Kent county compared to 5.9% for the state of Michigan.
  7. Professional Services and Management jobs are 4.4% of all jobs in Kent county compared to 7.2% statewide.
  8. Management jobs provide 3.6% of employment in Kent county compared to 3.3% in the state of Michigan.
  9. Administrative jobs are 7.9% of all employment in Kent county compared to 9.3% in the state of Michigan.
  10. Health care jobs are 14.2% of all jobs in the target market of Kent county compared to 12.3% statewide.
  11. Accommodation and Food Services jobs provide 8% of total employment in Kent county compared to 10.5% for the state of Michigan.

With the exception of subtle differences in certain industries, this analysis confirms what the establishments by industry and occupations analysis covered earlier - the targetmarket of Kent county just like the state of Michigan has a reasonably well diversified economic base with folks holding jobs in many industries. Thus a downturn in one industry of the economy could lead to job losses, but as long as other industries are on strong footing, the impact to the overall economy will be modest. This is good news for James and Carmine of Dependable Roofing.
