4.18 Industry Establishments & Employees Analysis
This analysis of house cleaning service businesses in Cobb county has three parts:
- The first part examines the total number of establishments in the target market of Cobb county.
- The second part deals with the total number of employees for house cleaning businesses in Cobb county.
- Finally, the third part of this analysis is the average number of employees per house cleaning business establishment in the county.
Total number of establishments:
In 2005 there were 39 roofing contractors in the Kent county, Michigan target market. However we find that number slowly dwindling down to 28 in 2008 as the real estate market slowed down and the demand for housing related contractors diminished. In 2010 however as the economy started slowly recovering from the great recession, we find the number of roofing contractors establishments in Kent county started growing and once again reached 39 in 2012 only to slow down back to 35 in 2014.Total number of employees:
- In 2005, roofing contractors in Kent county had 436 employees on their payroll. This of course does not reflect the many undocumented folks that tend to work off the books.
- From 2005 onwards there was a steady decline in the number of folks employed at roofing contractors in Kent county. We find that this number declined all the way down to 228 employees in 2011.
- In spite of the increase in the total number of roofing contracting establishments between 2010 amd 2014, there was no commensurate increase in the total number of employees and we find that by 2014, the total number of employees had remained relatively stagnant at 250.
Average employees for establishment:
- In 2005 we find that there were an average of 11.18 employees working at each of the 39 roofing contractor establishments in Kent county.
- With the slowdown in real estate that followed, this number want down all the way to 8.38 after popping briefly in 2008.
- As expected given the data we saw earlier, the average number of employees also failed to increase with the commensurate increase in the number of firms, and instead continued to slip all the way to 5.77 employees for per establishment in 2012.
This analysis demonstrates the cyclical nature of the roofing business. Like most other contracting services, the demand for roof installation, repair and replacement is impacted by the overall demand for real estate and overall level of employment in the local economy. James and Carmine are well aware of these swings and intend to bring their expertise in cash and receivables management to make sure they have a good cash position that will allow them to withstand slower economic times.
