4.10 Target Market Business Establishments by Industry Analysis

In this analysis we look at the number of business establishments by industry for the County of Kent County and compare that to similar data for the State of Michigan.The purpose of this analysis is to get a sense of just what is the economic landscape of the County when compared to the State and what conclusions if any we can draw from the data.

The industry groups that the various business establishments are broken down into are:

  1. Agriculture / Mining / Utilities
  2. Construction
  3. Manufacturing
  4. Wholesale Trade
  5. Retail Trade
  6. Transportation / Warehousing
  7. Information
  8. Finance, Insurance & Real Estate
  9. Professional Svcs & Management
  10. Administrative
  11. Education
  12. Health Care
  13. Arts & Entertainment
  14. Accomodation & Food Services
  15. Other Services

When we analyze the business establishments by industry data for Kent county and the state of Michigan we find the following:

  1. Agriculture, Mining, Forestry and Utilities represent very few establishments if any at either the county or state level.
  2. Construction business establishments are 8% of all establishments in Kent county and the state of Michigan.
  3. Manufacturing establishments represent 7% of all establishments in Kent county and 6% in the state of Michigan.
  4. Establishments in Wholesale Trade are 7% of all establishments in Kent county compared to 5% for the state of Michigan.
  5. Retail establishments come in at 14% of the total 15,727 establishments in Kent county compared to 16% in the state of Michigan.
  6. Transportation and Warehousing establishments are 3% of the total establishments in Kent county and statewide.
  7. Establishments in the Information Technology space are only 2% of all establishments in both the county and the state.
  8. Finance, Insurance & Real estate establishments comprise 11% of the total in Kent county as compared to 9% for the state of Michigan.
  9. Professional services establishments are 12% of the total as compared in Kent county as compared to 13% statewide.
  10. Establishments providing administrative services are 1% of all establishments in Kent county compared to 2% in the state of Michigan.
  11. Health care establishments are 10% of all establishments in Kent county compared to 12% statewide.
  12. Accommodation and food services establishments are 7% of all establishments in Kent county compared to 9% statewide.

The conclusions that can be drawn from this analysis is that the business establishments in both Kent county and Michigan state and well diversified to be able to withstand a slowdown in any one sector. Thus if manufacturing was take a leg down, the establishments in other industries will at least be able to help carry theh burden of a downturn. This diversification in the underlying economic base is critical for the overall health of the local economy. We feel that this is a net positive for James and Carmine of Dependable Roofing.
