4.10 Target Market Business Establishments by Industry Analysis

In this analysis we look at the number of business establishments by industry for the County of Cobb County and compare that to similar data for the State of Georgia.The purpose of this analysis is to get a sense of just what is the economic landscape of the County when compared to the State and what conclusions if any we can draw from the data.

The industry groups that the various business establishments are broken down into are:

  1. Agriculture / Mining / Utilities
  2. Construction
  3. Manufacturing
  4. Wholesale Trade
  5. Retail Trade
  6. Transportation / Warehousing
  7. Information
  8. Finance, Insurance & Real Estate
  9. Professional Svcs & Management
  10. Administrative
  11. Education
  12. Health Care
  13. Arts & Entertainment
  14. Accomodation & Food Services
  15. Other Services

When we analyze the business establishments by industry data for Cobb county and the state of Georgia we find the following:

  1. Agriculture, Mining, Forestry and Utilities represent very few establishments if any at either the county or state level.
  2. Construction business establishments are 8% of all establishments in Cobb county and the state of Georgia.
  3. Manufacturing establishments don't figure very high in either Cobb county where they represent 2% of all establishments, or in the state of Georgia where that number is 3%.
  4. Establishments in Wholesale Trade are 7% of all establishments in Cobb county compared to 6% for the state of Georgia.
  5. Retail establishments come in at 12% of the total 19,826 establishments in Cobb county compared to 16% in the state of Georgia.
  6. Transportation and Warehousing establishments are 2% of the total establishments in Cobb county compared to 3% in the state of Georgia.
  7. Establishments in the Information Technology space are only 2% of all establishments in both the county and the state.
  8. Finance, Insurance & Real estate establishments comprise 13% of the total in Cobb county as compared to 7% for the state of Georgia.
  9. Professional services establishments are 19% of the total as compared in Cobb county as compared to 14% statewide.
  10. Establishments providing administrative services are 7% of all establishments in Cobb county compared to 6% in the state of Georgia.
  11. Health care establishments are 10% of all establishments in Cobb county compared to 11% statewide.
  12. Accommodation and food services establishments are 8% of all establishments in Cobb county compared to 9% statewide.

The big differences in the analysis above is of course the significantly higher number of professional services, finance, insurance and real estate establishments in Cobb county as compared to the state of Georgia. These industry categories tend to provide higher levels of income and generate more wealth than say construction, transportation and warehousing. Folks with higher incomes tend to be able to afford larger homes and have the ability to afford the cleaning services provided by a firm like Spotless Homes.
