4.2 Population and Household Summary

In 2014 Allegheny County had a population of 1,231,255 compared to a population of 1,336,449 back in 1990. This represents a roughly 8% decline in the population and it has a lot to do with the decline of manufacturing and industry. When we look at the overall population for the State of Pennsylvania, we find that during the same period it has increased 7.6% from 11,881,643 to 12,787,209.

The median age for the target market of Allegheny County is 41.3, slightly older than the 38 years for the entire state of Pennsylvania. There are slightly fewer men in the County than the state of Pennsylvania, and that of course means that Allegheny County has more women as a percent of the total population than the overall state of Pennsylvania.

Just as in the case of the overall population, there has been a decline in the labor force for Allegheny County. Between 1990 and 2014, the County saw a decline of 1.2% in its civilian workforce while the state of Pennsylvania saw an increase of 8.7% during the same time period. Interestingly the per capital income for the County at $31,593 is higher than the $28,502 income per capita income for the State of Pennsylvania. Interestingly the median household income for both the County and the State are almost identical.

When it comes to poverty, we find that the target market of Allegheny County has an overall poverty rate of 12.9% compared to 13.3% for the State of Ohio. The household size for Allegheny County is 2.26 which is lower than 2.49 for the entire state of Pennsylvania.
