4.25 Consumer Expenditure on Food Away from Home by Area Type

In this section of the business plan we look at the average annual consumer spending on food away from home when the consumer is categorized into either Urban or rural. When looking at this data over a decade the following items stand out - Urban consumers spend more in absolute dollar terms than rural consumers spend more in absolute dollar terms than rural consumers and that trend has not changed for any year in the past decade.

Interestingly enough when we examine the data for percentage increases in spending patterns on food away from home, we find that rural consumers have actually increased their spending 25% over the past decade from $1,574 in 1999 to $1,968 in 2009 compared to a close to 22% increase in the amount spent by their urban bretheren.

Since A Taste for Tuscany is not in a rural area we don't have to worry too much about this analysis for now, but it certainly has some impact for the full service restaurant industry which is always looking to expand to new markets that are not being served well. For example, even though the location of a particular full service restaurant is rurual or ex-burban, if they are the only game in town, they may do very well.
